Reader’s Digest

Reader’s Digest is once again available in braille from American Printing House (APH).

To sign up, contact Hannah Sedlak of APH by email at magazines@aph.org or by phone at (502) 899-2387. The APH website has outdated information.

For a subscription, all that is needed is a name and address. It is better to provide a phone number or email as well. She receives all the returned magazines so if you move, she can contact you for an updated address.

APH only produces the braille version, and NLS is producing the audio version. If you are interested in the audio version, please call your reader advisor at 1-800-226-6075 or email OPAC_librarian@dbs.fldoe.org and they will subscribe you. This is also available on BARD for instant download.

The Library of Congress Wants Your Opinion

Beginning March 13, a sample of patrons across the country who currently use services provided by the Library of Congress’s National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped–also known as NLS–will be invited to participate in a nationwide survey. The information collected from this survey will guide NLS as they move forward on a variety of projects to enhance and expand the braille and talking-book program and help us understand the needs of patrons. As a part of NLS’s cooperating network of libraries, we encourage invited patrons to respond to the survey at their earliest convenience. Once you have received your invitation, if you have questions, please feel free to contact Gallup Support at galluppoll@gallupmail.com or call 1-888-297-8999. Thanks for sharing your opinions!

NLS Operations Alert: Play Multiple Books Easily

NLS has updated the firmware for the Digital Talking-Book Machine (DTBM). This update (version 2.1.16) allows users to sequentially play multiple talking-book titles on a single cartridge without the need to enter Bookshelf mode—a capability that has long been requested by NLS patrons and network libraries.

For cartridges containing more than one book or magazine, the new Sequential Play feature enables users to press the play/stop button to go to the next title when the player announces “End of book.” Standard Bookshelf mode will still work as before, allowing users to play multiple books or magazines in any order they wish. But for those who want a simpler method, the new functionality makes it possible to move from one title to the next without having to use the bookshelf.

Get the Update

You may request an upgrade cartridge by asking your reader advisor for it. It is available on the WebOPAC to request as book number FDB03944, DTBM Software Upgrade. The updated firmware is available for download on the NLS public website and the BARD main page. NLS has also added the firmware to the Magazines on Cartridge system for multiple-magazine subscribers. The firmware update will not be added to mass-duplicated, single title cartridges.

Using the Cartridge

Insert the cartridge or USB drive containing the software. The player will announce “Upgrading your player’s software.” Wait until the upgrade is complete and the player restarts (about 10 seconds), then remove the cartridge.

Getting Help Downloading

Technology is wonderful when it works. However, when something goes wrong, sometimes it can seem as though it takes forever to get the right help.

Email NLSDownload@loc.gov for immediate help straight from the experts. Be sure to include the email address you use for BARD/BARD Express and specific details about what device you are using, and what error messages you are getting. You cannot give too much information!

BARD Security Notice

To enhance security of patron accounts and prevent misuse, NLS will be making the following change to BARD:

Any patron account that has not been used in one year or more will be moved to an Inactive/Suspended status. Each day, BARD will check to see if a patron account was last used more than one year ago. When BARD identifies unused accounts, these accounts will be moved to the Inactive/Suspended status and libraries will be sent an automated email that lists affected accounts. Any BARD account that holds the status of Inactive/Suspended can be reactivated quickly and easily by a library administrator.

This change is effective March 23, 2018.

If you have questions, please contact the Library at 1-800-226-6075, or by email at:
OPAC_Librarian@dbs.fldoe.org. Thank you!

Format Change -- September 6, 2016

As of September 6, 2016, we will no longer be circulating cassettes (RCs). The National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped (NLS) announced a four-year process to withdraw and convert RC titles to digital format at all of the talking book state libraries, which began in 2012. Thousands of titles have been converted. Feel free to contact us if you discover a title is missing from a series or other inconsistency. This remains an evolving project, as some older books are unsuitable for conversion and must be re-recorded or, in some cases, removed from the conversion list. We hope you continue to enjoy our digital books on cartridges as well as books in downloadable format from the Braille and Audio Reading Download service of NLS (BARD).
