Volunteering at Florida's Braille and Talking Book Library

Volunteers make a difference for readers who are unable to read conventional print. We always are looking for new volunteers.   This volunteer effort ensures that people who have reading disabilities have access to Braille or talking books.

The types of services that you might want to do include:

Contact Jane Karp at Jane.Karp@dbs.fldoe.org to volunteer or get more information.

Pulling and Shelving Books

Volunteers assist by pulling cassette or Braille books from the shelves, attaching labels, and dropping them into a mail tub. Volunteers also assist by shelving returned books.

Duplicating Cassettes

Volunteers assist with high-speed duplicating, labeling, and packing containers for mailing.

Cassette Inspection

Volunteers inspect all books before they are loaned to other readers.

Labeling and Mailing Projects

Volunteers label and mail information on services to readers.

Machine Repair

Volunteers repair and service talking book disc machines, cassette players, and related equipment.

Recording and Monitoring

Volunteers assist in recording, monitoring, and reviewing college textbooks, monthly magazines, special projects, and recreational reading materials.

Braille Transcription

Volunteers must be certified by the Library of Congress in literary Braille transcription in order to produce books.  Classes are held at the Library.
